Hoover's retreat on the Rapidan River in Virginia, the camp the president used for weekends and quiet work away from Washington, is the subject here, captured on a summer day in August 1929, just months into his term. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented government officials and public life for decades, made the glass negative, which later came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Its surface shows some streaking and spotting from the natural breakdown of the original coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age that is worth keeping in mind when judging the image's tone and detail.
