The Rapidan Camp, the fishing retreat in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia, is the setting here, and this August 1929 glass negative records it in the first months of Herbert Hoover's presidency. Hoover had inherited the camp from the Coolidge administration and used it for rest, fishing and informal work away from Washington. The image comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of commercial photography that documented politicians and public life in the early twentieth century. The title was supplied by the company itself and has not been independently verified, and the glass plate shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging emulsion.
