Rapidan Camp, the Blue Ridge retreat in Virginia that Herbert Hoover used during his presidency, is the setting here, photographed on August 17, 1929, only months after he took office. Hoover valued the remote camp on the Rapidan River for its fishing, quiet, and room to work away from Washington. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that recorded government figures and public life in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives remain a valuable record of the period. Look for the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from age in the original coating.
