Hoover's retreat on the Rapidan River in Virginia, the camp the president used as a weekend getaway, is the setting for this August 1929 view, taken only months after he took office. The camp, which the government had established on land along the river in the Blue Ridge foothills, gave Hoover a place to fish, work and host small gatherings away from Washington. This image comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of commercial photographs whose staff recorded government figures and events during the 1920s and 1930s. The glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging emulsion, which are part of its physical history.
