The Rapidan Camp was the summer retreat that Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, used in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, set along the Rapidan River. This glass negative, dated August 17, 1929, shows the camp only a few months into Hoover's presidency, when he went there to escape Washington's heat and to rest. The image comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work made by a Washington commercial studio that recorded government figures and events in the early twentieth century. The glass plate has the streaks and surface blemishes that come with age, so the details are softer than a modern print would be.
