The camp in this view is the Rapidan retreat in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia, which President Herbert Hoover used as a rustic getaway from Washington. Marines from the nearby Quantico base helped build the complex in 1929, and this August view was made in its first year of use, only months into Hoover's presidency. The image survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company, whose work is now held by the Library of Congress. Viewers may notice streaks and small blemishes on the glass, a result of natural deterioration in the original coatings.
