Hoover's retreat on the Rapidan River in Virginia is the subject here, a camp the president used as a place to rest away from Washington. The date on the record, August 17, 1929, falls in the first summer of his presidency, when the camp was still a fairly new feature of his routine. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented government officials, buildings and events in the early twentieth century. Because it survives as a glass negative, the picture is also a reminder of the fragile, hand-coated plates that photographers used before roll film became standard.
