Hoover's camp on the Rapidan River in Virginia is the subject here, a retreat the president reached through the Blue Ridge hills rather than the White House grounds. This August 17, 1929 negative comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial studio whose work covers much of Washington's public life in the early twentieth century. The Rapidan camp, known to the Hoovers as a place for rest and work away from the capital, was set up in the Virginia woods during his first summer in office. The glass plate itself shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in the original coatings, which is part of what makes it a useful record of both the place and the medium.
