Few presidential retreats were as rustic as the camp Herbert Hoover set up on the Rapidan River in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia, and this view shows its guest tents on August 17, 1929, a few months into his presidency. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, made the glass negative, and its work documented the capital and its officials during the 1920s. Hoover used the camp for weekends of fishing and quiet work away from the city, and the simple tent arrangement shows how plainly it was built. Streaks and surface marks on the glass come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
