Few subjects in the Yosemite views are as recognizable as the river crossings, and this stereoview frames a bridge spanning the Merced River on the valley floor. Stereoviews like this one were produced in pairs of photographs mounted side by side, so that a viewer using a stereoscope saw a single image with depth. Yosemite Valley drew a steady stream of these cards in the late nineteenth century, when the valley was becoming a destination for travelers and the government was beginning to protect its scenery. The Merced, which winds through the valley floor beneath granite walls, was a favorite subject for photographers hoping to show how the water and the built crossing sat within such a dramatic setting.
