Sentinel Rock rises in the distance beyond the Merced River and the wooden bridge that carried travelers across to Hutchings' Hotel, a rare view that puts the valley's signature granite monolith and its early lodging in a single frame. James Hutchings ran one of the first tourist establishments in Yosemite Valley, and his hotel drew visitors who came by horseback and stagecoach long before the valley became a national park in 1890. Stereoviews like this one were sold in pairs to be seen through a viewer, so the scene appeared to stand in three dimensions in the parlor. The river and bridge in the foreground show how closely the earliest tourist facilities were tied to the valley's waterways.
