Hutching's Hotel stood in Yosemite Valley, and this view pairs it with Sentinel Rock, the granite monolith that rises above the valley floor near the Merced River. Stereoviews like this one were sold in sets during the late nineteenth century, when visitors and armchair travelers alike wanted to see the valley's cliffs and waterfalls in depth. James Hutching ran the hotel that welcomed early tourists to the valley, and the pairing of a lodging with a famous rock shows how the place was being presented to the public as a destination. Look closely at the scale of the rock against the small buildings at its base.
