Here the subject is Mary Ball Washington, mother of George Washington, shown at about eighty years old, the "four-score" age in the title. The image reproduces a painting by Robert Edge Pine, an English-born artist who worked in America in the later eighteenth century and painted her near the end of her life; she died in 1789. This color halftone dates to around 1916, when such printing made paintings widely available, and it reflects the early twentieth-century interest in keeping images of the nation's founding family in circulation.
