In 1903, Portland, Oregon, was a fast-growing river port on the Willamette, shipping lumber, wheat, and salmon down to the Columbia and out to Pacific trade. Its railroads, including lines that connected to the Union Pacific system, had turned the city into the main gateway for the Pacific Northwest. Civic leaders were planning a world's fair to mark the centennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition, which had reached the lower Columbia in 1805, and the site was being cleared and laid out on the low ground near Guild's Lake in the northwest part of the city. Residents of the time would have connected the grounds with that ambition to put Portland on the map as the region's commercial center. The Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition opened in 1905, and this view captures the land before the buildings went up.
