In 1904, Sinnissippi Farm in Oregon sat in a state whose economy still rested mainly on land and water. Timber cutting, salmon canning on the Columbia River, and wheat and orchard fruit from the Willamette Valley provided much of the work, and railroads carried those goods to market. Portland, the state's largest city, was preparing for the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, which would open there in 1905 and draw national attention to the region's growth. Farm families in the valley measured their year by planting, harvest, and what their crops brought at market, and a working farm like this one stood for that seasonal routine.
