In 1906, the Middle Cascades stretch of the Columbia River in Oregon was a corridor of rail, river traffic, and fishing that tied the interior to Portland. The Oregon Railway and Navigation Company ran its line along the south bank, and steamboats worked the river between the rapids, where the federal locks at the Cascades had opened in 1896 to let vessels bypass the white water. Salmon fishing remained central to life along the gorge, and canneries and fish wheels supplied a regional market that shipped by rail and river to Portland and beyond. Communities such as Cascade Locks depended on the portage, the railroad, and the seasonal catch, while the gorge's steep walls and falls made it one of the most visited scenic stretches of the Northwest.
