Bedford, Virginia, in 1916 was a small Piedmont county seat where farming, tobacco, and the Norfolk and Western Railway shaped daily life. Its best-known institution was the Elks National Home, which the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks had opened on the edge of town in 1903 as a residence for aged and infirm members. Lodges across the country supported the home, so the town's visitors and funds came from far beyond Virginia. Elsewhere in the South, courthouse squares and railroad depots still defined many communities, while the war in Europe seemed distant to people here. This view shows the home much as residents and visitors of that day would have known it, a place of care set in open country.
