The stereograph catches the corner where Broadway meets Canal Street, a junction that by the late 1890s carried heavy foot traffic, horse-drawn vehicles, and streetcars. Canal Street takes its name from the drainage channel cut in the early 1800s after the Collect Pond was filled in, and the crossing grew into one of lower Manhattan's busiest commercial corners. Stereo cards like this one were made as pairs of slightly offset photographs, which a viewer could fuse through a stereoscope into a single image with apparent depth. Cards of this kind were popular parlor entertainment, so the view also offers a record of how ordinary city streets looked to late-19th-century viewers.
