Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1914 was barely two years old. The Boston Red Sox had opened it on April 20, 1912, on reclaimed marshland beside the Back Bay Fens, close to Kenmore Square, where streetcar lines carried crowds from across the city. Boston was then a major port and manufacturing center, with textile and shoe factories, and its working families filled the bleachers on weekday afternoons and holidays. The ballpark was among the early ones built largely of steel and concrete, and fans knew it as a modern park that drew big crowds to the Fenway neighborhood. In 1914 the surrounding streets were still being built up, and the park stood at the edge of a city that was growing outward toward Brookline and Roxbury.
