Athol, Massachusetts, in 1914 was still a manufacturing town built along the Millers River, where factory whistles set the rhythm of the working day. Its shops produced machine tools and metal goods, and the railroad through the valley carried finished work to buyers while bringing in coal and raw iron. That summer war broke out in Europe, and its effect on American orders for tools and metal would be felt over the following years, but in 1914 mill owners were mostly watching their own order books. Residents measured their town by its employers, its churches, and its small downtown of brick blocks, and the crowded streets and river frontage in this view show a community that expected its prosperity to depend on the next shipment.
