Northfield, Massachusetts, in 1914 was a small hill town in Franklin County's Connecticut River valley, where farming and dairying supported most families. Outsiders knew it mainly for the schools founded by the evangelist Dwight L. Moody, the Northfield Seminary for young women and the Mount Hermon School for young men across the river. Each summer, Bible conferences drew preachers, students and church workers to the village and filled its hotels and boarding houses. That summer the gatherings continued even as news of war in Europe reached the valley, a reminder that this quiet town was tied to events far away.
