Northfield, Massachusetts, in 1914 was a village of tree-lined streets and white-steepled churches on the hills above the Connecticut River. Most of the valley's factory work lay in mill towns along the Millers and Deerfield rivers, so the village mainly served nearby farms with a few shops, a bank and a post office. Horse-drawn wagons still carried much of the local traffic over unpaved roads, though automobiles were beginning to appear. Residents measured the year by church and school calendars, and a walk to the Sunday service was an ordinary part of village life.
