The title borrows its name from James Whitcomb Riley's popular 1885 poem "Little Orphant Annie," so this picture pairs a sentimental literary figure with a real institutional setting in Pittsburgh. Orphanages and charitable homes were common in American industrial cities during the 1900s, housing children whose parents had died, could not support them, or had been separated from them. The print comes from a portfolio issued by the Photo League in New York, and its catalog record notes that some of its details are unverified.
