Honus Wagner, the Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop whose full name was John Peter Wagner, appears here in a portrait from the years when he was one of the National League's most feared hitters. He spent his whole major league career in Pittsburgh, won the league batting title in 1909, and helped the club beat the Detroit Tigers in that year's World Series. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, the work of a news photo service, and its date rests on later research rather than a firm contemporary record.
