Pittsburgh ballplayers posed with President Calvin Coolidge on October 10, 1925, the date recorded for this picture. That falls within the 1925 World Series between the Pirates and the Washington Senators, and the opening game was played in Pittsburgh that day. Coolidge, a Vermont Republican, was in the White House at the time and took an interest in the national pastime. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented politics and public life in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, so they are worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
