This lithograph shows the Battle of Pittsburg Landing in southwestern Tennessee, not the Pennsylvania city, despite the "Pittsburgh" spelling on the board. The fighting took place on April 6 and 7, 1862, near Shiloh Church on the Tennessee River, and it was among the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War up to that time. Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant held their ground after a surprise Confederate assault, and the Southern commander, Albert Sidney Johnston, was killed on the first day. New York publishers Currier & Ives issued many battle prints in 1862 to meet public demand for news of the war.
