Taken from the porch of the Bright Angel Hotel, this view looks out over the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, with the hotel's position on the rim giving the photographer a direct line of sight into the gorge. The Bright Angel was one of the early lodgings at the canyon, serving visitors who arrived by rail in the early 1900s, when the Grand Canyon was becoming a major destination for American tourists. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many such views for travelers and sellers of souvenirs, and this long print, mounted on linen, was made to be displayed or handled as a keepsake. Its wide format suits the canyon's sweeping scale.
