Bright Angel Trail, which drops from the South Rim near the Grand Canyon's Bright Angel Point area, is the focus here, with the caption noting roughly 1,300 feet of sheer precipice visible from the first mile of descent. Around 1907 the trail was already a popular route down into the canyon, used by tourists on mule back and by the cattle and mining traffic that had long shaped its use. The Fred Harvey Company and the railroad were building up tourism to the South Rim in these years, so pictures like this one helped introduce a wide public to the scale of the chasm. The record comes from a caption card and has not been independently verified, so the details of the photographer and exact date should be read with that in mind.
