A steep stretch of trail known as Jacob's Ladder shows people coming down the path, with the caption placing the spot 2,255 feet below the rim. The date of about 1907 is approximate, a period when tourism was growing after the Santa Fe Railway reached the South Rim in 1901. Descending into the canyon was physically demanding, and the switchbacks cut into the rock show how the trail worked its way down the walls. The small figures on the path give a sense of scale against the cliffs.
