The Bright Angel Hotel, shown here against the cliffs of the Grand Canyon, was one of the earliest tourist lodgings on the South Rim, built in the late 1890s near the head of the Bright Angel Trail. Around 1906 the canyon was becoming a destination for travelers arriving by rail, and the hotel marked the growing effort to make the rim accessible to visitors who came to see the gorge rather than to work its land. The caption card that accompanies this print is unverified, so its date and details are best read as approximate. Look at how small the buildings appear beside the broad layered walls behind them.
