Grand View Hotel sat on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and this c1906 print pairs the hotel with the cliffs that drew visitors to it. Grand View was one of the earliest tourist lodgings built right at the rim, and it catered to travelers who came by stagecoach and later by rail to see the canyon up close. The caption card that accompanies the record is unverified, so the exact date and photographer are uncertain, but the scene reflects the early twentieth-century push to turn the canyon into a destination. Look at how the hotel is set against the open expanse of rock and sky, a reminder of how modest the rim's first visitor accommodations were.
