The caption calls the El Tovar a rendezvous where visitors met informally, and the hotel's lobby and terrace were a natural gathering point on the South Rim. Fred Harvey Company built it in 1905 in a rustic style of logs and stone, and named it for Pedro de Tovar, a member of the 1540 Coronado expedition that reached the canyon. This stereograph, copyrighted by Keystone View Co. and dated around December 1926, captures the hotel in the years when railroad and automobile travel was bringing growing crowds to the park.
