The El Tovar Hotel, shown here as it stood around 1906, was built on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and became one of the first major lodgings in the park. The Fred Harvey Company, which ran a chain of railroad hotels and restaurants across the Southwest, opened it in 1905 after the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway brought visitors to the rim. Designed by architect Charles Whittlesey in a rustic style of local stone and timber, the hotel was meant to give travelers a comfortable base for seeing the canyon. Its setting on the rim made it a symbol of the park's early tourism.
