From the roof of Hopi House, this stereograph frames El Tovar Hotel, the Fred Harvey Company's rustic lodge on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, which opened in 1905. Hopi House, designed by Mary Colter and built to showcase Hopi crafts, sits beside the hotel and echoes the stone architecture of Hopi pueblos, so the view links two very different building traditions at the canyon's edge. The card is a Keystone View Company stereograph, and its caption gives a date of about 1926, though that date is unverified. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images would have given visitors and armchair travelers a sense of depth along the rim.
