Hopi House sits on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, placed beside the El Tovar hotel, which the Fred Harvey Company opened in 1905 as a luxury lodge for rail travelers. The building was designed by Mary Colter, who drew on Hopi and Pueblo architecture for its stone walls and low, flat-roofed profile, and it was built to display and sell Native American crafts. This c1906 photographic print shows the young complex as visitors of the period would have encountered it, though the caption card that accompanies the record is unverified, so details of the date and setting should be checked against other sources.
