Hogans, the traditional domed dwellings of the Navajo, stand within sight of El Tovar, the hotel the Fred Harvey Company opened on the South Rim in 1905. The caption describes Navajo families living in these structures at the hotel grounds, a reminder that the Grand Canyon's tourist facilities were built alongside communities whose presence in the region predated them. The hotel took its name from García López de Cárdenas's lieutenant, Pedro de Tovar, who led the Coronado expedition's party to the rim in 1540. The date of c1906 comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified.
