El Tovar, the rustic hotel perched on the South Rim, is the particular subject here, set beside the canyon edge with the Coconino Forest spreading out behind it. The Fred Harvey Company built El Tovar in 1905 to serve the growing number of rail travelers who came to see the canyon after the Santa Fe Railway reached the rim, and its log-and-stone design was meant to blend with the landscape rather than dominate it. Around 1906, when this view was made, the hotel was a showpiece of the new tourist trade, and photographs like this one helped establish the South Rim as a destination in its own right. The record comes from an unverified caption card, so the exact photographer and vantage point remain uncertain.
