Few pitchers of his era are as easily recognized as Mordecai Peter Centennial Brown, known as Three Finger Brown, shown here standing on a ballfield. As a boy he lost parts of two fingers on his right hand in a farm accident, and the damaged hand gave him a grip that helped him throw sharp, unpredictable breaking balls. He pitched for Chicago's National League club, the Cubs, through most of the 1900s and was a mainstay of their staff during their pennant-winning years. This posed portrait is a more deliberate view than the action shots common in the Bain Collection, which is largely made up of news photographs.
