Mordecai Peter Centennial Brown, known as Three Finger Brown, is pictured here in full uniform as a member of the St. Louis Federals, the Federal League club he joined in 1914 after years with the Chicago Cubs. A farm accident injured his right hand as a boy, and the altered grip he developed helped him throw a sharp, breaking curveball that made him one of the era's most effective pitchers. The portrait comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a news photography archive that documented American public life in the early twentieth century.
