Sophia Hayden is the subject of this head-and-shoulders portrait, shown facing right, and she is credited as the architect of the Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. She was in her early twenties when she won that commission, shortly after becoming the first woman to graduate from MIT's architecture program. This halftone was reproduced from a drawing in Johnson's *History of the Columbian Exposition*, so the image reached readers as an illustration in a printed book. The caption card records no date for the portrait, so it is best read as a document of the fair's era rather than of a specific moment.
