A giant see-saw, a large amusement ride built for crowds, stands out among the sights at the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition in Nashville in 1897. The fair marked 100 years since Tennessee became a state in 1796, and it drew visitors with exhibits, midway attractions and rides. This picture is a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, produced and sold such cards by the thousands, so the image reflects how fairgrounds life reached home parlors and schoolrooms at the end of the nineteenth century.
