Few views of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition show a state pavilion as directly as this stereograph does, with the Illinois Building as its subject. The exposition marked the 100th anniversary of Tennessee's admission to the Union in 1796, and it drew states and organizations to build their own exhibition halls on the fairgrounds in Nashville. Keystone View Company's stereo cards, like this one, were sold as souvenirs and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave visitors and armchair viewers a sense of depth in architecture like this.
