The illumination of Union Square is the focus here, showing the park in New York City during the nationwide celebration of the country's hundredth anniversary on July 4, 1876. The engraving was drawn by Schell and Hogan and published in Harper's Weekly on July 22, 1876, in the midst of the Centennial year. Wood engravings like this one gave readers who could not travel to Philadelphia a sense of the festivities, with crowds, lights, and fireworks rendered in fine black-and-white detail.
