Four scenes trace a rural outing, from a wagon loaded with visitors from New Jersey to a train pulling into the grounds. Together they follow the journey many country families made to the Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia, which ran from May to November 1876 in Fairmount Park to mark the nation's hundredth birthday. Harper's Weekly published the wood engravings in its August 26, 1876 issue, when the fair was drawing large crowds by rail and road.
