Arranged on a shelf in the Government Building, this group of historic relics was one of many displays that drew crowds to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, the year the nation marked a century since the Declaration of Independence. Federal exhibits in that building mixed artifacts and sculpture with the era's enthusiasm for showing the country's past beside its industrial progress. Issued as a stereograph card, the picture was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly different images into a single scene with depth.
