Taken in October 1875, this sepia print shows the Government Building in Fairmount Park while it was still under construction, about seven months before the Centennial Exhibition opened on May 10, 1876. The fair marked the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and drew millions of visitors to Philadelphia, who came to see exhibits from the federal government and from many nations. The photograph records the scaffolding and bare framing that preceded the finished grounds. Its caption card lists Thailand among its subject tracings, but the record flags that information as unverified, so that attribution should be treated with caution.
