Taken in September 1875, this sepia view shows the Horticultural Hall and its Floral Hall section in Fairmount Park while the building was still under construction, months before the Centennial Exhibition opened in May 1876. The hall's iron framing and large expanses of glass were meant to show how modern materials could enclose plants and gardens on a grand scale. Because the photograph catches the work in progress, its scaffolding and open framing give a useful look at how the structure was assembled.
