Dated September 7, 1875, this sepia print documents the framing of the transept of Machinery Hall, one of the major buildings going up in Fairmount Park for the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia. The fair marked the nation's hundredth year of independence, and its organizers wanted to showcase American industry, so Machinery Hall was built to house steam engines and manufacturing equipment on a very large scale. The Centennial Photographic Company recorded many views of the grounds as they rose, and images like this one capture the iron and timber skeleton of the building before the exhibits arrived.
