Taken in September 1875, this sepia print shows Machinery Hall on South Avenue in Fairmount Park while the grounds for the Centennial Exhibition were still under construction. Designed by Hermann J. Schwarzmann, the building was among the largest structures of the 1876 fair and housed the massive Corliss steam engine that drove machinery throughout the exhibition halls. The Centennial Photographic Company documented the site as work moved toward the fair's opening in May 1876.
