Taken in October 1875, about seven months before the gates opened, this view shows the east end of Machinery Hall while the building was still under construction in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. The Centennial Exhibition, held to mark the nation's hundredth birthday, was one of the largest world's fairs yet staged in the United States, and Machinery Hall was among its biggest structures, built to house the engines and industrial equipment that powered the displays. The sepia print, made by the Centennial Photographic Company, records the bare framing and scaffolding of a project that had to be finished in a matter of months.
